A nationwide coalition led by Authors Alliance and the Organization for Transformative Works is working together to modify an exemption to U.S. copyright law that would allow e-book authors to access (or “rip”) material on DVDs, Blu-ray, and digitally transmitted video for fair use purposes. Fair use is the limited right to repurpose copyrighted material in making new work, in certain situations. There is an exemption currently in effect – but it only applies to nonfiction multimedia e-books offering film analysis. We think it should apply to all e-book authors making fair use. By taking this short survey, you will be helping us gather information about how e-book authors make fair use today and why authors need to be able to access a range of encrypted materials in order to do so.
